Iceland – Weekly shop for one on Keto (UK)

Walking into a supermarket and trying to find keto-friendly products can be a bit daunting as it takes time to check all the nutrition labels and understand what should be avoided. To make things easier I’ve gone and created a sample shopping list for keto products in Iceland. And no they don’t just sell frozen food!

This shopping list is based on one person following the keto diet with a daily carb limit of around 20-25g. Of course, this list assumes that you already have some basic ingredients at home, like oils, spices & herbs.

What’s in my Iceland keto basket?

To make it easier to navigate the supermarket, I’ve broken the shopping list down into specific categories (i.e. aisles in the store). I also like to cook, so don’t expect many ready-made meals! Admittedly, most are high in carbs and should be avoided where possible.

While Iceland is famous for frozen food, I won’t be focusing too much on that as I don’t have a large freezer and most are foods that are not keto-friendly.

Online orders: Iceland also offers free delivery on orders over £35 subject to availability.

So that’s a weekly keto shop for one in Iceland. Admittedly, that’s quite a bit of food and would normally last me a bit longer but hopefully you get some ideas! Let’s take a look at the total.

Shopping basket total: £39.50

Downsides of Iceland

You can buy the vast majority of your weekly shop in Iceland but there are a few items that are either more expensive or they just don’t stock.

Examples:

  • Almond milk – £1.60 vs. £1 elsewhere.
  • Daily essentials – Coffee (limited range), Sweetener, etc…
  • Spices & Herbs – you won’t be able to buy many spices and herbs in Iceland.

Loaded Courgette Fries

Summary: Chopp courgettes into fries, place in a large bowl. Drizzle with olive oil, cayenne powder, salt & pepper and mix to combine. Place on a foiled baking sheet and cook at 180c for 30 minutes (or until brown). Ten minutes before done sprinkle shredded cheddar and mozzarella over fries and turn oven up by 20c to melt cheese.

Optional: Fry some mince and add on top of the fries for some extra flavour and added protein!

Beef in Creamy Peppercorn Sauce

Ingredients (from shopping list): Mince, Double cream, Butter, Mushrooms

Additional ingredients required: Beef stock, Red onion, Pepper, Xanthan gum

Recipe: Found here

Summary: Fry the mince and mushrooms then prepare the sauce. Mix together and serve perhaps with cauliflower rice or courgette/swede fries.

Conclusion

Compared to other shops the Iceland keto order comes in a bit higher but still under £40. The food will also likely last longer than a week so it will average out to the same price over a longer period.

If you have a large freezer then you can do a much larger order and make this much more cost-effective as some of the frozen meats and veg are priced very competitively. This all results in making Iceland a very viable keto shop.
