Where to buy low carb keto peanut butter in the UK

A lot of brands of peanut butter sold in the UK, contain additives like sugar and palm oil. This can make them not suitable for a keto diet. In addition, they can also vary greatly in price and taste!

I’ve tried many of the most popular ones, so you can make an informed decision. Some are only available online or in-store. So keep an eye out for deals! I often buy 1kg tubs as I use it in a lot recipes.

Always check the nutrition label

Whenever I’m thinking about buying food, the first thing I check is the nutrition label. After many years my gaze automatically drifts towards the Carbohydrates per 100g.

For most big brand peanut butter, the average carb count seems to be about 12g per 100g. Some are higher (14g+) and usually have a lot of sugar in them. It makes it a lot more palatable and you can easily eat way too much. Always remember that it is very calorie dense (over 600kcal per 100g).

When looking at the ingredients list, I ideally only want to see Peanuts listed and nothing else (except maybe salt). Most of the cheaper brands may add: Palm Oil, Sugar and Peanut Oil. That all adds to the carb count.

For example, Grandessa Peanut Butter sold in Aldi (pictured below) is only £0.85 for a 340g jar. It has 12g of carbs which is about average but the ingredients lists Sugar, Palm Oil and Peanut Oil. This is an example of a brand you should avoid.

What should I be looking for?

The Foodie Market Smooth Peanut Butter

A great example of a relatively low carb peanut butter is The Food Market’s Smooth Peanut Butter in Aldi. It’s only £1.25 for a 280g jar and lists only peanuts as the ingredient. The carb count is also very low at 9.6g per 100g.

You can see that the texture and colour of the nut butter is quite different compared to most big brand ones. It has pieces in, with a darker overall colour. It is also quite a bit more oily and needs to be mixed occasionally, as the oil can separate over time. The taste is still very nutty but it is of course a bit richer and bitter compared to their sugary counterparts.

The Food Market Smooth Peanut Butter Nutrition label

In summary, look for a peanut butter that:

  • Has very few ingredients, ideally just Peanuts.
  • Has a carb count of less than 10g per 100g. Ignore the serving sizes.
  • Lists 100% nuts on the label.
  • Is Less than £2 per 300g.

Note – Crunchy peanut butter tends to have lower carbs per 100g than smooth. It’s great for snacking but not for cooking,

Other nut butters

Almost all nuts can be made into a butter. Over the past couple of years more and more are hitting the shelves in UK food stores. Check out my articles on where you can get them:

Buying in-store

All supermarkets usually have their own brand of peanut butter. However, they are usually all made by the same manufacturer and have a high carb count. Popular brands like Whole Earth have no added sugar versions which are usually just 100% peanuts. So keep an eye on for when they are on offer!
