Best barbecue sauce for keto in the UK

Before I was keto, one of my favourite meals was sticky barbecue chicken wings and ribs. You can probably guess that it wasn’t keto (or very healthy)! The ingredients that give it that rich sweet flavour is brown sugar, and usually some honey. Neither of which are keto friendly. Fortunately, there is such a thing as a low carb barbecue sauce for keto.

What to expect

I’ve tried quite a few keto friendly BBQ sauces and a lot of them are either way too watery or have a very artificial taste. In addition to that, they are usually pretty expensive. Sometimes it’s better to have a go at making your own. Some of the best recipes I’ve tried are:

Give them a go and see what you think. However, if you’d rather just buy some to try and save you the hassle, then take a look at my recommendations below.

BBQ sauce in UK stores

Finding sugar free BBQ sauce in UK food supermarkets is difficult. Asda and Sainsbury’s use to sale the Blend Bros brand but they seem to have stopped stocking it around the end of 2019. In recent years, bigger brands have started to release no added sugar versions of sauces like Tomato Ketchup (see my recommendations here). Hopefully, they’ll start doing barbecue sauce for keto / low carb diets soon.

Buying online

The pickings are slim for barbecue sauce. There are quite a few available but most are repugnant and I can’t recommend them! Only a small handful are palatable, so give them a try and see what you prefer. Everybody’s taste buds are different.

This is the closest to real BBQ sauce I’ve tasted. It is a bit watery but the flavour is the best by a country mile. Only issue is that you have to order in bulk and I go through this pretty quickly! I buy this with their tomato ketchup.

Still quite thin, but with an OK flavour profile. Doesn’t taste too artificial and they have a variety of BBQ flavours to choose from. However, it’s quite expensive but easier to purchase than others.

* They usually have free delivery over ‘x’ amount (normally £30)
